It’s a shame that
movies like Love Jones are an anomaly rather than the norm. Contrary to the
Hollywood notion, most Blacks live completely normal lives. We have great friends, loving
families, and passionate relationships the same as everyone else in society. Our lives are
not filled with drive-by shooting’s, drug dealers, and gang banger’s; no more
than white society is completely made up of serial killers, racists, and disgruntled
postal workers. Love Jones gives us a rare glimpse into something so common and
something so real. Normal lives, and normal situations played out by normal people.
It’s a far cry from the Blaxploitation films of the 1970’s and the wise-cracking
cops and hard nosed police chiefs we see so often today. We can only hope that Hollywood
takes notice and strives to make movies like Love Jones become the norm instead
of the exception.
